Practical questions

Best season and what to wear for a day on Phang Nga Bay

An open boat and a sea-canoe under the Andaman sun ask for different packing than a day spent in Phuket town.

November to April, the dry season

Phuket's dry season runs roughly November through April, giving the clearest water, the bluest skies, and the calmest crossings for photographs of Ko Tapu and the wider bay. It's also, unsurprisingly, when the bay is busiest — the same crowd pattern covered earlier in this guide, worth weighing against the better weather rather than ignoring.

June to October, the wetter months

Outside the dry season, expect a real chance of rain on any given day, sometimes heavy and short, sometimes settling in for longer. Tours generally still run through this period — Phang Nga Bay's islands offer some shelter from open-sea swell — but it's worth packing a light rain layer and accepting that a clear-sky day isn't guaranteed.

Sun exposure is the bigger risk than heat

Most of the day happens on open water or in a low sea-canoe with essentially no shade, which adds up to more direct sun exposure than a typical beach day where an umbrella or a shaded bar is always nearby. Reef-safe sunscreen reapplied through the day, a hat, and light long sleeves matter more here than they would touring Phuket's temples or old town.

What actually gets wet

Sea-canoes supplied on this tour come with dry bags for phones and cameras, but splashes over the side and rain, when it happens, are still part of an open-boat, open-canoe day. Sandals that stay on rather than flip-flops make getting in and out of a canoe over wet rock noticeably easier.

Seasickness and the crossing

Phang Nga Bay's scattered islands break up open-sea swell more than an unsheltered coastline would, so the crossing is generally gentler than a genuinely open-water boat trip — but anyone prone to motion sickness should still take the same precautions as on any longer boat day: sit where you can see the horizon, and go easy on a heavy breakfast beforehand.

What's genuinely optional

Swimwear under your clothes is worth having in case a swim stop is offered, but beyond the sun protection, a dry bag and sturdy sandals, most other gear recommended for tropical trips generally is more relevant to multi-day travel than to one long day on a guided boat that supplies its own kayaking equipment.
